The wrong Reed
Imagine a Pittsburgh newspaper praising a Cowboys
or Raiders player back in the Super Bowl 70's
It's bad enough that we have to gaze
upon the Baltimore Ravens for several hours during the AFC
Championship game tomorrow. Third time this season we've seen their
circus act. In the meantime we've heard tales of the "bounties" they
have placed on Steeler players over the years. Too bad the proof
can't surface soon enough to result in some player suspensions and
huge fines before tomorrow.
Adding insult to injury is the front page of today's Pittsburgh
Sports section (Saturday January 17, 2009). This particular sports
hack,
who has just earned the new nickname "The Benedict Arnold of
Pittsburgh Sports" ran a front page story praising the Baltimore
Ravens' Ed Reed. The story would have fit perfectly in the Baltimore
Sun, but certainly doesn't belong in a Pittsburgh newspaper.
Especially the day before a crucial game that decides who goes to
the Super Bowl.

But sometimes it's more about what you don't write that's
really important. The guilt of Omission.
When was the last time you saw a front page feature story, complete
with half-page graphic, featuring the seldom recognized Steelers
place kicker Jeff Reed? Here is the player who scored
the majority of points (7 pts) in the Steelers last win over
Baltimore on December 14th. And in the September 29th win over the
Ravens, Jeff Reed scored 35% of the Steelers points (8 pts) and
kicked a 46-yard field goal to give the Steelers a 23-20 overtime
victory. Jeff
Reed greatly outdistances all other Steelers in scoring, and
finished his 7th season with a consistency that has made him famous.
Or could make him famous if he was ever recognized.

Imagine back in the Super 70's
if a local Pittsburgh newspaper ran a big front page story praising
the play of the Cowboys' Cliff Harris or the Raiders'
Jack Tatum.
They would have gotten run out of Tahn!
