WPIAL has been in existence since the early 1900's to provide
fairness and structure to Western Pennsylvania's junior and senior
high school athletic
competitions. Most school's sports fans are familiar with the
basic structure of four sports divisions, with the largest being Quad
A, then Class AAA, Class AA and Class A. As of 2008, there were
147 junior high school and 138 high school members in the WPIAL. The
complete history of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic
Athletic League can be found
here.
The other four pages for WPIAL on SportSpheres are designed to
provide our visitors with ready access to news, blogs and videos of
their favorite WPIAL teams. We would also like to add photos to
these webpages if anyone would care to submit a few original photos of WPIAL sports action. A photo credit with the photographer's name
will be included below each photo. Submitted photos cannot be
copyrighted and must be the sole property of the person who submits the photo(s).

Heinz Field hosts November
championship games Western Pennsylvania has often been called 'Quarterback Country'
due
to all the famous quarterbacks who got their high school starts in this part of
Pennsylvania, where football is king. The WPIAL has been part of this proud athletic
tradition. In addition to the professional football games played by the
Pittsburgh Steelers, Friday nights create a lot of
excitement for local high school football fans. This excitement is
capped off when the WPIAL Championship games are played at Heinz Field
in late November each year.
