The world's football roots are in Pittsburgh mud

Tradition!

You've gotta give it to the Rooney's, aka "the front office" of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, because they listened to the players on the Steelers' team and decided to stay with natural turf on Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

But you also gotta believe it has to do with tradition.  115 years ago, just a few blocks from the Steelers' stadium, the world's first professional football game was played..... on natural grass.

Pro Football got its start in Pittsburgh
Historical marker near the Steelers' stadium proclaims:
November 12, 1892
FIRST PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL GAME

This part of the United States takes its football seriously. Not the type of football played across the rest of the globe (soccer), but good old, smash-mouth GRIDIRON football. The kind where you get down and dirty in the mud. Real mud.

Western Pennsylvania comes by its football tradition honestly. The first football team to wear numbers. A long string of slingers with the likes of Namath, Kelly, Montana and Marino easily earning it the nickname "Quarterback Country."

With well earned football traditions like these, you can see why the Rooney's stuck with grass and mud. Real football is played in Pittsburgh. Bring your cleats and laundry detergent, because some tradition will get ground in!
