'Favre turns Purple'
Steeler fans understand your pain Green Bay
Brett Favre's signing with the
Minnesota Vikings created a huge stir in sports news, all the way
across the world. It wasn't so much about his age or him being fickle this time, it had more to do with his signing with an archenemy
of the Packers.
Old
Steeler fans understand your pain Milwaukee. It never sat well when
Franco Harris went to Seattle. How could Pittsburgh fans stand
seeing him in a jersey other than Black 'n Gold? After all the Super
Bowls he helped the Steelers win, and the Immaculate Reception as
the icing on his career. He even played for nearby Penn State in
college.

But the case that more closely
resembles Favre going to the Vikings would be when the Steelers Rod
Woodson went to the Baltimore Ravens. Yep, same-same, Rod had a long and storied
career with the Steelers and then donned the purple jersey of an
archenemy in the same division. Déjà vu indeed.
During his Hall of Fame induction, Woodson said he understood why
Steeler fans booed him while he played for the Ravens, as well they
should have, he indicated. After all, he was a Steeler.

What fans often forget is football is just like Hollywood in so
many ways, it's basically an entertainment business. Entertainment
that is dictated by television networks and advertising (..even
college football). And it's a business that is controlled by the almighty
dollar and the salary cap. This isn't like switching armies in a war
zone, it is merely business as usual.
If it's any consolation to Packer fans, there's a good chance that
Brett will remain true to the Packers Nation in his post-retirement years,
just as Franco, and Woodson to some degree, have pleased the
Steelers Nation. Woodson
opened a Pittsburgh restaurant following his NFL retirement. Franco
has become (remained?) a stalwart Pittsburgher and good citizen by contributing his
time and talents to many worthwhile causes around Pittsburgh.
