Following a decent 9-7 season for the Cowboys, but yet another
year without a playoff berth, Head Coach Wade Phillips said, "I
have to look at myself first from how I deal with things, from how
we have training camp, how we have practices, whatever."
OK Wade, that's my cue to make a suggestion
-- Borrow a few pages from your Dad's book. Not the playbook,
the "play" book. You see, Bum Phillips was famous for inviting
players to his barbeques, Texas style. How do you think he got
Earl Campbell to run so hard, week after week, year after year.
The man was a human wrecking ball. Bum won his player's hearts
with his BBQ!

“It was
a bad year... I'm going to get a plan together and we
need to start it as quickly as possible. The next season
starts right now for us.” Wade Phillips |
If inviting players out to your ranch for
barbeques doesn't work, you may want to borrow that famous Bum
Phillips cowboy hat. That is, if it isn't trademarked. There was
no doubt when you looked at that sideline, from anywhere in the
world, where the coach and his team were from -- TEXAS!
But Bum's most admirable trait of all was
being humble, and coining clever sayings like, "The road to
the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh." Bum
Phillips still has a bunch of fans, and they aren't all in
Texas.
